Our History.

The Fremantle Rugby League Club was established in February 1948. Following the arrival of several ex-servicemen who settled in Perth after World War II, interest in Rugby League grew. These men—Gordon Squires, Roy Williams, Frank Baguley, Vie Hodgekiss, Alf Schaffer, and Ken Allen—helped establish the first Rugby League competition in Perth. The competition began with four clubs: Fremantle, Perth, South Perth, and Cottesloe.

Clubhouse Development

In 1980, the club marked its 50th anniversary with a major fundraising effort to build a new clubhouse. Funding came from members, supporters, sponsors, and local businesses through the purchase of gold, silver, and bronze bricks. Built largely through voluntary labour and material donations from club members, the clubhouse officially opened in February 1980. Fremantle became the first licensed Rugby League club in WA, and its innovative design -featuring a balcony overlooking the field - has since been replicated by other sports clubs. That same year, the ground was named Ken Allen Field, honouring a key figure in the club’s history.

Junior & Senior Development

Fremantle recruits players from a broad catchment area, including Fremantle, Jandakot, and Bibra Lake. The club has always focused on promoting local junior players into senior teams. Today, many sons and daughters of past players proudly wear the Roosters colours in both junior and senior grades.
